Japan wanted to industrialize to become a superpower like Great Britain and the USA, and it did. The emperor

supported following the Western path of industrialization.  The country built its fist railroad line in 1872. Coal production
 
grew from half a million tons in 1875, to more than 21 million tons in 1913.  Original Japanese industries, such as tea

processing and silk production.  Developing modern industries, such as shipbuilding, made Japan competitive with the
West.
